Microsoft upgrades controversial quantum chip - researches are still sceptical.

Microsoft's second-generation Majorana processor reports dramatically improved qubit stability while renewing debate over whether topological quantum computing can deliver scalable fault tolerance.

In June 2026, Microsoft unveiled Majorana 2, its second-generation quantum processor designed around topological qubits. Microsoft claims the redesigned semiconductor-superconductor system improves qubit reliability by about 1,000 times, with average lifetimes near 20 seconds and some lasting up to a minute. Longer-lasting qubits could reduce the enormous error-correction requirements facing other quantum-computing approaches.

Microsoft says this progress supports its goal of building a scalable quantum computer by 2029. However, independent scientists remain skeptical about whether Microsoft has conclusively demonstrated the necessary topological states. Majorana 2 therefore represents both promising engineering progress and an important scientific challenge requiring independent validation and successful scaling.
