In this seminar Malcolm Ramsay-St Claire offers a reflection on his paper and research on Quantum Instrinsic self, Autonomous AI and The Burden of Agency and Ethical Responsibility. The Burden of Agency follows previous offers and questions posed by Malcolm Ramsay - St. Claire where we asked whether autonomous AI can withstand and carry moral responsibility, or if accountability remains inherently human.
This parallels quantum theory, where outcomes arise without deterministic control yet remain structured . For AI, this creates a paradox: systems may act without intrinsic self yet produce real - world consequences. Denying them agency risks moral negligence; granting full agency risks misattribution.
Investigating the nature of agency, intent, and the creator’s duty for machine - born consequences. Agency, when examined through anattā, dissolves into conditioned processes - no fixed agent exists, only causal flow. Yet responsibility emerges pragmatically within this flow. The solution is a gradient model of agency, distributed across system, designer, and environment. Crucially, failure to adopt such a model risks neo - AI colonialism - assigning responsibility without rights, replicating historical exploitation in synthetic form.
